Overview

Transform lives and reshape futures by harnessing technology to address the urgent needs of refugees and vulnerable communities worldwide.

The problem

Problem statement

Problem Statement: Launched in 2015 during the Syrian Refugee Crisis in Europe, the Techfugees non-profit became known for bringing the technology world to bear on solutions to meet the needs of refugees and displaced people.

Since then it has worked on numerous projects such as, for example, creating remote working job opportunities for refugees in Lebanon. During the surge of refugees from Ukraine across Europe, it mobilised the Techfugees Emergency Response Network, supporting 3,000 tech and humanitarian professionals to support Ukrainian refugees. Last year it worked with BuffaloGrid to deploy solar-powered hubs that can charge smartphones and distribute content in refugee camps in Kenya and Uganda.

Now, Techfugees plans to take its knowledge and experience of marrying tech solutions and the needs of refugees to the wider humanitarian, development, and global health sectors.

The Techfugees Foundation plans to relaunch an online platform to push and promote scalable solutions across cities, countries, and vertical topics, to meet the needs of a world wracked by war, natural disasters, and the effects of climate change.

Why is Techfugees switching to wider humanitarian issues? It’s simple: The magnitude of many of today’s crises is now dwarfing the response capacity of even the multi-billion-dollar humanitarian sector.

Project details

Project Details: The newly-launched Techfugees (based in London) will create a global database platform for humanitariamism and development (global health, education, Global Goals etc)

As well as offering a powerful online database, the Techfugees Platform will engage in Media/Research and Global Advocacy.

The Techfugees online platform will contain a body of knowledge around humanitarian-tech and development solutions; create a global network of tech-industry workers who want to be involved in humanitarianism/development; and create links with humanitarian and development NGOs to assist with scalable solutions.

As well as the online platform, Techfugees will mount an annual “Davos-like” Summit (date to be announced), bringing together the best solutions from its network.

The relaunch of Techfugees will be modeled partly on the business model of Crunchbase, the database used by tech startups and investors.

Project scope

Tasks: The following is a breakdown of the potential offering for Techfugees under this model:

Crunchbase operates a freemium data-as-a-service (DaaS) business model focused on startup, private company, and venture capital intelligence. Here’s a breakdown of how its business model could be adapted by Techfugees.com:

🔑 1. Core Product Offering Techfugees would provide structured data on:

  • NGOs and private companies that want to contribute to humanitarian and development initiatives
  • Founders, main actors, CEOs, and donors
  • Funding rounds, mergers, partnerships
  • Trends and sector news

This data powers search, discovery, and analysis tools used primarily by professionals in humanitarianism, development, CSR, and philanthropy.

💰 2. Revenue Streams A. Subscription Plans (Primary Revenue) Techfugees would offer tiered SaaS plans:

  • Free: Limited access to data and search features, available either free or at very low cost to NGOs and Charities
  • Techfugees Starter (~$??/mo): Enhanced search filters, basic alerts. Aimed at the Private sector.
  • Techfugees Pro (~$??/mo): Advanced search, custom lists, data exports. Aimed at the Private sector.
  • Techfugees Enterprise (Custom pricing): API access, bulk exports, team collaboration, and CRM integrations (like Salesforce and HubSpot). Aimed at the Private sector.

This is the main source of recurring revenue. B. Enterprise Data Licensing Large organizations license Techfugees data in bulk or via API to integrate into proprietary platforms. C. Advertising / Sponsored Content Techfugees sells visibility through:

  • Sponsored company profiles
  • Email newsletter ads
  • Placement in “trending” or other categories

🔄 3. Freemium Growth Flywheel

  • Free users contribute data (updating their profiles, adding funding news, or other data, etc.)
  • This crowdsourced model enriches Techfugees’ dataset
  • Improved data quality attracts more paying users

🧠 4. Data Sources

  • User-submitted data (crowdsourced) ...

Users and functionalities
